Prepare Yourself Before Looking At Diamond Engagement Rings

It’s hard to make a rational decision when you’re standing there in front of that polished glass case full of all those sparkling diamond engagement rings. That’s why you should consider your budget before you even leave home. Don’t let your emotions override your wallet. All of those beautiful diamond engagement rings will still be there, patiently waiting to dazzle you, after you’ve decided exactly how much you want to spend.

The average cost of a diamond engagement ring is around $3,500 to $4,000 and most jewelers will tell you that you need to spend the equivalent of two months worth of salary. Now, why would they say you NEED to spend that much? Will the world end if you only spend one month’s worth of salary? No, it won’t. But they won’t make as much commission if you only spend one month’s salary.

I know it’s hard to take practical matters like budgets and bills into consideration when you’re shopping for something that’s supposed to symbolize your undying love and commitment. And jewelers will tell you you can’t possibly put a price on love. They’ll also tell you that a bigger diamond and a better quality diamond mean you love your sweetheart even more. They’re telling you these things to get you to spend more money.

Another marketing ploy used by jewelers is to tell you that a diamond is a good investment, that they never decrease in value, and that you can come back years later and exchange it for an even larger diamond and only have to pay the difference. If you’re looking at diamond engagement rings as an investment, then that must mean that a few years from now, you’ll have no problem selling that ring in order to get the money together for a down payment on a house. Do you really think she’s going to let you do that? You should never look at something as emotional diamond engagement rings as an investment.
