When Shopping For Jewelry, Diamond Rings Are A Girl’s Best Friend

When a man says he’s going shopping for jewelry, diamond rings are usually the first thing on his mind. Whether he’s getting ready to propose marriage or simply reaffirm his love for his wife, you can bet that if he’s shopping for jewelry, diamond rings are what he has in mind.

But most men know very little about shopping for jewelry, diamond rings especially. They’ll spend weeks researching makes and models of cars before they decide which one is best. But they’ll rush into a jewelry store and plunk down their credit card for the first diamond ring that catches their eye. Many a poor bride is destined to wear an engagement ring, for the rest of her life, that not only looks lifeless and yellow and dull, but it makes her finger look fat, too.

In order to avoid getting that lusterless, yellow diamond your wife or girlfriend will loathe for the rest of her life, do yourself a favor and do some research on the 4 Cs of diamonds – Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat. A yellow tinge to the diamond usually indicates impurities in the stone. And if the diamond doesn’t sparkle it may have been poorly cut.

Often, the way the stone is set will affect it’s sparkle and shine. The diamond will pick up the light that’s reflected off of the metal of the setting. So if you choose a lesser grade diamond that has more yellow in it, and you place it in a yellow gold setting, the diamond will look even more yellow. Some women may prefer this look, but the trend today is more toward clear, colorless diamonds. Placing that same diamond in a silver, platinum or white gold setting will make it appear to be much clearer and add to it’s sparkle.

Take a look at the lady’s fingers and hands, too. Round stones work best for most fingers, but if she has long, thin fingers she may prefer an elongated diamond shape, such as an emerald cut or marquise diamond. If her fingers are short and thick, pear shaped, round or princess cut diamonds will look the best. Remember when shopping for jewelry, diamond rings really are a girl’s best friend.
